From Artisan to Digital Innovator: A Designer’s Journey
Foundations in Craftsmanship
My career began not behind a screen, but in the workshop—serving an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker. There, I learned the discipline of patience, attention to material, and the value of preparation—the timeless principle: measure twice, cut once. That craftsman’s mindset still shapes everything I create today.

Transition to Graphic Design
Inspired by the simple, geometric shapes and symbolism of Saul Bass and the illustrative elegance of J.C. Leyendecker and his seemingly effortless illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post among many more, I pursued further education in graphic design and fine art. Their influence shaped my approach to design, emphasising clarity, purpose, and aesthetic impact.

Photography & Cinematic Influence
Outside of digital work, I explored storytelling through photography. Much of this is shaped by the cinematic lens of Stanley Kubrick, who made his bones in photography, and many others, but especially Kubrick – His symmetry, tension, and command of light deeply inform my composition. Whether designing a layout or capturing a frame, I aim to create work that’s intentional, atmospheric, and human.

Embracing the Digital Revolution
As the digital landscape evolved, I recognised the transformative potential of technology in design and I was presented with an (improbable, and unrefusable) opportunity to lead the print & digital division of St.Tropez, a prominent cosmetics brand. This role allowed me to merge traditional design principles with emerging digital platforms, enhancing brand engagement and expanding our reach in the beauty industry.
My career then led me to Saltrock Surfwear, where I helped modernise their online direction, combining authentic surf culture roots with digital-forward design strategies. Beyond Saltrock, I contributed to creative projects for brands such as Barrel Rock and Vantastic, each adding new dimensions to my approach—whether in lifestyle branding, experiential design, or adventure-driven identity building.
Studio Akāw
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked with a broad range of forward-thinking brands and all those roads led to Studio Akāw, my studio based in Devon. We create digital experiences from scratch; designed and developed in-house with clients spanning art, music, beauty, fashion, and sustainability. At Akāw, nothing is templated. Every solution is built with care and intent.

Adaptation
Throughout my career, I return to what I learned in the workshop: plan carefully, execute deliberately. I’ve remained committed to evolving with this new industry, integrating cutting-edge technologies, and refining my design approach to meet contemporary challenges. The “measure twice, cut once” philosophy continues to underpin my work, ensuring that each project is approached with diligence and foresight.
